Verlaine’s Gallantry

For high voice and Piano

“It rains in my heart as it rains on the town, Why this soft hurt that lives in my heart? Long sobs drawn from violins in autumn, Tease the heart with languid art – in monotone”

These nine settings of Verlain’s poetry were rendered into English by the poet Paul Driver in 2013, when I set them for tenor and piano. The titles are The Art of Poetry, Moonlight, Fond Exchange, Piano Practice, I dreamt of you, Prison Sentence, Ariette, It rains in my heart, and Song of Autumn.
