These three piano pieces were commissioned by Clive Swansbourne for recitals at the 1990 Cheltenham Festival. They are very varied in character.
Perhaps the most interesting is Mandela Blues and Stomp (8 mins. 40 secs.) which celebrated Nelson Mandela’s release from prison with a soulful blues and athletic “stomp”, before finishing with references to South Africa’s National Anthem Nkosi Sekle I Afrika.
Tiderace (6 mins 50 secs.) is a celebration of the ocean’s wind and waves.
Self-Image (5 mins 55 secs) ties ideas from the other two together in a way that allows for both contemplation and virtuosity.
