Presence…COOL…Transcend

This concerto for solo trumpet and six players (soprano and tenor saxophone, flugel horn, tenor trombone, euphonium/tuba) runs for around twenty minutes It was written in 2020 for Bede Williams, of St Andrews University. He premiered the work the following year with the Wallace Collection conducted by John Wallace. This was the period of the Covid pandemic and the soloist begins playing hidden behind a screen, from behind which he/she gradually emerges. The slow movement is a dream of Gershwin’s “Summertime”, and the finale ends with a quote from “We shall Overcome”…
