Judith

Chamber Opera In Two Parts

JUDITH is an operatic treatment of the famous bible story of Judith and Holofernes. It was original a short piece for a triple bill format. Now it’s in two parts (The City and The Camp) of about 45 minutes each. It could be set in the modern middle east. There are 13 roles (eg. in part one – Judith:sop., Miryam: sop., Rachael: sop. Hadassah: mezzo., Achior: counter tenor, Zecharia: ten. Holfernes: bar., Betzalel: bass) – only the two main characters appear in both parts (as well as Judith’s friendMiryam) all these roles can only be sung by only eight singers. The Band (flute, bassoon, trumpet synthesiser, harp, violin cello and bass) also numbers eight. JUDITH was originally commissioned in Swedish by Vadstena Academy. Now it is in English.
