Inspired by events in Germany, the opera concerns an immigrant couple, whose daughter falls in love with the son of their German friend, the naïve idealist, Dieter. Unfortunately, his boy, Benno, is a member of a skinhead gang and there are tragic results for the family. At the end, the young couple are together. East and West was commissioned by Almeida Opera and premiered at the theatre, in London in 1995.
