Infinity Contained (1978)

for SATB chorus, organ and three bells

Duration: 10 minutes

Text: Psalm 90, St Thomas Aquinas

Commissioned by the second St Magnus (Orkney Islands) Festival

This work was written to be performed inside the large central space of St Magnus Cathedral. It combines a setting of the psalm text about the reliance of the Christian on a rock-like relationship to God, with the philosophy of Aquinas, proving God’s existence as The First Efficient Cause, with the cold light of logic. A speaker narrates the words of Aquinas. Soprano and Alto soloists are later extracted from the choir.
